HELP!!!

Ok i have an olds steering column( i assume by the horn on the steering wheel). I have one red wire that comes out of itand goes no where( it was tucked up inside column). Need to get turn signals and brake lights working to get the car to storage 35 min away. So i went out and bought a so cal speed shop turn signal to mount on the column. Comes with all the wires hooked up to it with bullet ends to connect into car wiring. My question is

A) do i need this part? Is there a way to use the olds wiring? Is there supposed to be more wiring than what there is coming out( red wire)?

B) if i do need the turn signal( until i can afford a new column) how to i hook it into the existing wiring? Even if i got a new column and it is all prewired i still do not see how it gets hooked up. Pics would help if you have them. Did some searches but coming up empty

Thanks

A. If the Olds column doesn't have 6 or 7 wires coming out of it, the turn signal switch isn't there or the wires have been removed. You probably do need the aftermarket switch.
B. There should be a plug, with 6 wires, n the dash harness near the bottom on the steering column. It should look simular to this. .... http://www.trifive.com/garage/56%20Chevy%20Assembly%20Manual/12-30.gif The aftermarket turn switch should have instructions telling which wire to attach to the wires in the plug. The wires purpose is labled in the drawing.

P.S. Are you sure it's an Olds column, or just a Olds steering wheel?

Thanks. I will look further into this wiring diagram. I saw the plug it refers to but it looked like something was already plugged into it. Looked like it went to the headlight switch

As for the column. Not sure it is an olds column. Def an olds steering wheel. I am not likeing this working on other peoples messes! Lol

Thanks for the info. More to come

Ok it could be a chevy column. Does anyone have a pic on what the insides look like. Looks like in my box o parts that was sent with the car there is a turn signal switch with its wires and some camming and levers. A pic of how that all goes together would be useful as well. My internet searches turns up every chevy column but the tri five column. Getting frustrated with my search abilities.

Mike, Don't leave us hanging to long, am anxious to hear that you had success. You mentioned that the column might be a Chevy or might be an Olds, but do you know what year it is? Obviously the newer columns are different that the TriFive columns, and many of the newer columns, 70s and newer have similar turn signal switches but some had small lights in the mirror and some on the top of the fenders and the electrical is still very similar just more of it. Don't let it get to you. If you are close to a GM dealership they will probably let you use one of their manuals and they are very detailed. Let us know how it comes together.

Will keep you updated. Gonna be a while though. Gonna start an 8 day rotation at work tomorrow. Also just drove it 40 min away tonight for some free heated storage at my inlaws. So working on it will be way less frequent now than ever.

Not sure what year column is in it. Did not get much info when i bought it earlier this year. The guy i bought the car from bought it from an estate and the guy that was building it was no longer with us. So the family did not know too much about it.

Ok. sorry to keep you all hanging. I finally got everything all hooked up. Went with a so cal speed shop chrome turn signal switch to mount on the outside of the column. Since I have decided not to do a full restore just yet( read garage is small and there are kiddos running around, or will be more than one soon,) so no need for unnecessary yelling for scratches.

So this will be a rat rod of sorts. Just gonna drive it as it is for now and fix things that will withstand time before resto.

Found an old turn signal switch with the connector still attached so I cut it off and spliced it into my so cal harness. After an attempt or two I got everything all matched up and they all work great. Even the indicators on the dash work. I like the so cal turn signal setup so far..... just have to remember to turn the signal off after turning....lol.
